Bristol Rovers stadium battle set for decision in March

A final decision on Bristol Rovers’ appeal over the sale of the Memorial Stadium land to supermarket giant Sainsbury’s to generate funds for a new stadium will be announced in March according to the Bristol Post.

Rovers’ current home is located just off Gloucester Road in a vibrant area of the city which contains many shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants and Sainsbury’s had agreed a deal with the League 2 club in the region of £30 million for the Memorial Stadium land to enable the supermarket chain to build a new superstore.

The funds generated from the sale were set to be used by The Pirates to build a new 21,700 stadium on the University of West England’s Frenchay campus. The new stadium was expected to include a 1000 seat conference and banqueting centre, 28 executive boxes and a large teaching space for the University of West England. The plans were left in tatters in February 2014 when Sainsbury’s pulled the plug on the deal leaving Bristol Rovers’ long term stability in question.

Rovers have appealed against the supermarket chain’s decision and their case was considered in a London Court during the past two days. The case was adjourned at 4pm yesterday afternoon and will be discussed further in March.

The Pirates were promoted back to the Football League in May and have been in excellent form of late with the club well and truly in the running for promotion to League 1.
