Derby sign Blackburn Rovers defender

Derby County have today completed the permanent signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Markus Olsson, the club have confirmed.

There had been rumours and speculation linking the defender with a move away from Ewood Park this month and Derby have now completed the transfer.

Olsson signed for Blackburn on a free transfer in 2012, following in the footsteps of twin brother Martin.  Martin Olsson left Blackburn to join Norwich City, leaving the left-back position open for his brother to fill in.

However Olsson didn’t fully establish himself in the Blackburn first-team until last season after an injury to first-choice left-back Tommy Spurr.  Olsson was consistently one of Rovers’ best players and won the club’s Player of the Season award.

Despite the award, Olsson did not sign a new deal with Blackburn meaning he could leave for nothing at the end of this season.  Following the speculation about a move away Olsson was removed from the Blackburn team, with new boss Paul Lambert instead deciding to play Spurr.

Lambert said of the move: “It is a really good deal for the club.  He was out of contract in the summer and could have walked away for nothing, so it was important that we acted in the club’s best interests.”

It is believed that the transfer fee involved could rise to £1 million.
