Rowett Hopes For Fabbrini Deal

Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett is hoping to make Diego Fabbrini his marque signing after Middlesbrough completed a deal to sign Gaston Ramirez.

Ramirez signed for Boro’ on-loan earlier today and Rowett believes this could now pave the way for Fabbrini to complete a £1.5million move to St Andrews in the coming days.

Fabbrini is on a one-year loan at Boro’ from Watford and the Hornets do not have a January window recall clause.

That means Boro’ hold all the aces and would have the option of keeping until his loan ends in June.

But today’s deal to bring Ramirez in until the end of the season makes it likely Fabbrini will head back to the Midlands.

The Blues had Fabbrini on a successful loan spell at St Andrews last season and boss Gary Rowett is keen to have him back on a permanent basis.

Rowett said; “A player of that quality is the type of player we are trying to bring in.

“But as we know you have always got to tie that into one or two other clubs trying to do their own business or wait for the right time to do it.

“Certainly we are working incredibly hard to bring players in of that ilk because we think that’s what we need to become even better.”

If City do manage to sign Fabbrini it will be their most expensive capture since Curtis Davies joined from Aston Villa for £3.5 million in February 2011.

Livewire Fabbrini has proved a useful member of the Boro squad this term and has scored six goals in his 26 appearances.

But with intense competition for the ‘number 10’ playmaker role there is no guarantee Fabbrini will feature on a regular basis in the months to come.
