Burnley 4 Derby County 1 – Match Report

Burnley moved up to third place in the Championship table after a thumping 4-1 victory over promotion rivals Derby County at Turf Moor.

The home side took the lead half an hour into the contest when Derby County centre half Richard Keogh connected with Matthew Lowton’s cross and diverted the ball into his own net with Scott Carson left motionless in The Rams’ goal. County’s response was immediate when Jacob Butterfield equalised with a stunning 20 yard volley to ensure that both sides went into the break on level terms.

In the second half Sean Dyche’s Burnley side stepped up a gear and took the lead in the 54th minute when Andre Gray slotted away a penalty after being fouled by Richard Keogh who suffered a disastrous evening at Turf Moor. With the home side applying further pressure The Rams crumbled again just 6 minutes later when former Burnley man Jason Shackell handled the ball in the box. Burnley striker Sam Vokes blasted home the resulting penalty kick to give The Clarets a two goal advantage.

Derby County’s lack of fortune was again evident in the 66th minute when Scott Arfield’s 25 yard drive took a lucky deflection off Jason Shackell and looped beyond a helpless Scott Carson in the County goal.

Arfield’s goal added the gloss on a 4-1 victory which helps push The Clarets closer to the automatic promotion places in the Championship while Derby County will be wondering how Lady Luck evaded them so much on a miserable trip to Lancashire.
