Diego Fabbrini

Birmingham chase Middlesbrough loanee for £1million

The Daily Mail is reporting that Birmingham City are set to complete the signing of Diego Fabbrini on a permanent deal from Watford. The player is currently on loan with Championship title challengers Middlesbrough but has struggled to play in recent times. He had a productive loan spell at Birmingham last season and Gary Rowett is set to sign him for £1million.

The one-cap Italian international has scored six times for the Riverside Stadium club so far this season. He has mostly been restricted to the bench in recent times however, although he has had a slight injury as well. Rowett has been desperately to bolster his offensive options since Demarai Gray left to join Leicester City. Will Buckley also recently joined on loan from Sunderland.

The Blues are in a rich vein of form, defeating promotion chasing Derby County and Ipswich Town in their last two games, both by a 3-0 score. Whilst that may suggest they don’t necessarily need to sign anybody any time soon, they do lack strength in depth in certain areas.

The two clubs are in ‘advanced talks’ and a deal to bring Fabbrini back to St Andrews, this time on a permanent basis, is potentially only a few days away from completion.

He began his career in Italy with Empoli, before moving on to Udinese in 2011. He would make his Italy debut during his time with the club, featuring in the friendly defeat against England. Continuing their association with the club, Fabbrini then left Udinese to sign for Watford. He has struggled for a consistent run of games whilst at Vicarage Road, moving out on loan on four occasions to Siena, Millwall, Birmingham and most recently Middlesbrough.
