Andrew Shinnie

Rotherham closing in on loan of Birmingham forward

Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn is hoping to complete the loan signing of Birmingham City midfielder Andrew Shinnie before they face Charlton Athletic this weekend. It was hoped he would sign in time for their match at Cardiff City a few days ago, but it was delayed, as reported by Eurosport.

The 26-year-old has struggled for game-time at St Andrews this season. Although he spent the early part of the season out through injury, he has found it hard to dislodge the likes of Jon Toral from his preferred attacking midfield position. Will Buckley signing on loan from Sunderland will push him further down the pecking order with the Championship play-off chasers.

Redfearn has already been very active in the transfer market this month and is clearly showing no signs of stopping just yet. Ever since his appointment he stressed the importance of adding quality to his squad in January. He admits the Shinnie deal is ‘ongoing’ but it was delayed due to complications involving other transfers,

“It’s still ongoing. He’s somebody we fancy. These things take time.

We’ve got to be patient. We were hoping it would get done before Saturday, but we’re not at that stage yet.

Other clubs are involved. It’s not just ourselves in the transaction. Players have to come and go from a few clubs.

He’s an attacking midfielder with flair and an eye for goals. He would add real competition for places.

Our interest in the transfer market has raised the performances of our players. They want to stay in.”

The Aberdeen-born forward wasn’t in Gary Rowett’s squad for their victory over Ipswich Town a few days ago and now looks set to swap a play-off push to a relegation scrap as he searches for regular first-team football. It was an impressive spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle which led to Birmingham City signing him on a pre-contract agreement before he made his debut against Watford in 2013.
