Matt Smith

Bristol City hope to re-sign fans’ favourite from Fulham

The Bristol Post understands that Bristol City are reignited their interest in Fulham striker Matt Smith. He spent a more than productive loan spell at Ashton Gate last season and they are said to be lining up an offer to lure him back to the West Country. He has struggled for game time with Fulham this season.

The Robins are hoping to sign the player on a permanent deal but it remains to be seen if they could match any price that Fulham would deem acceptable, whilst also meeting the wages of the player. He is believed to be seeking a new challenge, after only making 14 appearances for the Craven Cottage side this season, only four being starts.

Prior to Steve Cotterill’s departure, he revealed that the club were desperately looking to sign a striker in this window. With only ten days to go, time is running out for them. Recently they have been knocked back in their hopes to sign Zach Clough from Bolton Wanderers and Yann Kermorgant, who yesterday signed for Reading. Caretaker boss John Pemberton hopes to add a striker such as Smith, as well as a left back before deadline day.

Last season Smith scored 13 goals in 23 games whilst on loan with Bristol City, including four in one match against Gillingham in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Area Final tie, a competition which the Robins eventually won, along with the League One title. The player was left out of Slavisa Jokanovic’s squad altogether at the weekend, despite an injury to usual reserve Cauley Woodrow, meaning he is practically verging on being frozen out by the Serbian.

Smith became a popular figure not just amongst the fans, but also his team-mates. With most of last season’s squad still remaining at the club, he would fit into the dressing room environment like a duck to water. Whilst he is still under contract at Craven Cottage until the end of next season, he could be available should a suitable offer be received. Prior to Fulham, Smith broke into the Football League with Oldham Athletic before earning a move to Leeds United in June 2013.
