Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Enrique ‘Kike’ Sola Clemente from Spanish La Liga side Athletic Bilbao. The forward joins on loan until the end of the season and is in contention to feature in tomorrow’s Championship encounter away to now-managerless Bristol City.
The 29-year-old has struggled for game-time in Spain in recent seasons, ever since linking up with Bilbao from Osasuna in 2013. He has scored twice this season in a Copa Del Rey game, but heads to the Riverside Stadium hoping for more game time. He shall compete with the likes of David Nugent and Kike for an attacking position, although he can play in a slightly deeper role as well.
Manager Aitor Karanka believes that his versatility makes him a handy option to call upon, as they look to continue their fine run of form in the hope of winning automatic promotion at the end of the season,
“He is a player who can bring something different.
He is strong, he can play as a second striker and as a number ten.
He brings us something extra we don’t have.
Yesterday Karanka hinted that although this transfer was close, he didn’t expect it to go through before this weekend. Whether he will make his debut at Ashton Gate tomorrow remains to be seen. The former Spanish Under-21 international has featured ten times this season so far.
