Wigan capture former Barnsley and Doncaster defender

Wigan Athletic have secured the signing of 24-year-old defender Reece Wabara, who has signed with the Latics until the end of the season after his deal with fellow League One club Barnsley expired.

A product of the Manchester City youth academy, Wabara has bounced around the Football League in recent years, including stints with Oldham, Doncaster and most recently Barnsley.

The youngster also briefly spent time on trial with Scottish Championship side Rangers, but decided to begin his 2015/16 season with The Tykes, making 26 appearances for Barnsley since signing a short-term contract with the Yorkshire club in August.

Having already played against Wigan twice this season, Latics manager Gary Caldwell has had plenty of time to analyse Wabara, clearly being impressed enough to sign the Englishman on a deal lasting until the end of the season.

Speaking to Wigan’s club website, Caldwell said of Wabara:

“He is an experienced defender at this level, is quick and dynamic and can play the wing-back role or as part of a flat four.”

With Manchester United youngster Donald Love having returned to Old Trafford this week after his loan deal expired at Wigan, coupled with the injury setback of veteran right back Kevin McNaughton, Caldwell sees Wabara as filling a position of need.

“With Donald Love recalled to Manchester United and Kevin McNaughtion still unable to join the squad full-time yet, we needed someone who can operate on the right side of defence and we are delighted Reece can come on board.”

Wabara becomes the fourth player to have signed for Wigan so far in the transfer window, with still over two weeks left for further business to be completed.
