Middlesbrough are in talks to sign Spanish striker Kike Sola on loan from Athletic Bilbao, report the Daily Mail.

The 29 year old striker looks set to sign for Boro on loan for the rest of the campaign.

He was due to play for Athletic against Villarreal on Tuesday but was pulled out of the squad before kick off, after Middlesbrough made their approach.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka said “we are following him.”

“He’s a player who is up front, he can play as a striker or a No 10, so we have to think and know if he wants to come here, but it’s another in the list and all of them on that list can improve the team.”

“I think it will be a loan.”

Sola signed for Bilbao from Osasuna in 2013 but has failed to win a regular starting spot at the Basque club.

Middlesbrough are top of the Championship and are on superb form.

After their 1-0 win at Brentford on Tuesday, they are six points clear of second placed Derby with a game in hand and haven’t conceded in nine games.
