Championship runaway leaders Middlesbrough continued their assault on the league title after grinding out a well earned victory over Play Off contenders Brentford at Griffin Park on Tuesday evening.

The match was a tight encounter which was decided by a solitary goal when Boro defender Daniel Ayala bundled the ball into the net after some poor handling from Bees goalkeeper David Button from a corner kick on the hour.

In the end Boro had their goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos to thank after a string of fine saves secured maximum points for The Teessiders. Boro have extended their lead over second placed Derby County at the top of the Championship to 6 points while the club are now 8 points clear of Hull City in third position.

Aitor Karanka’s side also have the luxury of a game in hand over all of their promotion rivals excluding Hull City.

Boro are in blistering form and only a significant collapse could surely now deny the club a long awaited return to the Premier League. Since their last league defeat at Hull City on 7 November the club have gone unbeaten in 9 league matches and have not conceded a single league goal since the defeat at The KC Stadium.

The victory at Brentford extended Boro’s excellent run with the club not having tasted defeat against The Bees since 1938.
