Derby County are closing in on the signing of highly-rated Cheltenham Town youngster Luke Thomas. The winger has attracted interest from a whole host of clubs, but the Rams now appear to have won the race.
The Gloucestershire Echo understands that a £100,000 bid has been offered by the Championship promotion-contenders and that the player will sign a two-and-a-half year professional contract at the iPro Stadium.
The 16-year-old was offered a trial by Portuguese and European giants Benfica, so much is the talent and potential of the player himself. He made his Cheltenham first-team debut earlier this season in an FA Trophy victory against Chelmsford City.
He has scored 19 goals so far this season for the club’s academy, understandably leading to many clubs monitoring his progress and pondering over a potential move.
It would seem unlikely for Thomas to walk straight into the Derby County first-team fold at this moment in time. Head Coach Paul Clement has recently sent big on two wingers in the form of Nick Blackman and Abdoul Camara from Reading and Angers respectively.
However he would certainly fit into the category of being a player for the future. Considering the interest in him, it is something of a coup for Derby to win this hotly-contested battle for his signature. The teenager is expected to official complete his transfer in the coming days.
