Coventry aren’t going anywhere without a fight
After going 3-0 up against Bristol City, Coventry City fans would have been forgiven for thinking their club had turned a corner following their off-the-pitch problems. A second half comeback, however from Sean O’Driscoll’s men must have had Sky Blues fans fearing the worst. But with the likes of Leon Clarke, Franck Moussa and John Fleck, Coventry have a side that certainly wont’t be pushed over by their League 1 rivals. And even following the heartbreak of giving away a 3-0 and 4-3 lead, they came back to eventually win 5-4. Respect.
Assombolonga is better than Showumni
Well, on this showing he is anyway. One of the battles of the day was at Meadow Lane where Notts County’s Enoch Showumni and Peterborough’s Britt Assombolonga were both looking to fire their teams to victory. They were two very contrasting performances however. Showumni’s effort couldn’t be doubted, but his inability to win headers at 6ft5 is a serious problem whilst Assombolonga represented a man on springs. Whereas the County man struggled to get into dangerous areas, Assombolonga looked ready to pounce at any second and was rewarded for his efforts 20 minutes from time when he smashed the ball into the back of the net from just outside the box.
The angry roar that Showumni let out mid-way through the second half was probably the most impressive thing he did all day.
Leigh Griffiths won’t have any problems adapting to English football
As Wolves struggled for goals last season, the Molineux faithful must be wondering why Leigh Griffith’s was allowed to light up last years SPL instead of keeping his club in The Championship. Griffiths was named young player of the year last campaign and on his latest showing, it’s no real surprise. A flurry of impressive attempts a long with two goals against Gillingham can only leave Kenny Jackett licking his lips at the prospect of this seasons goal difference.
Dean Smith is a top manager
After losing arguably their three best players from last year: Febian Brandy, Will Grigg and Jamie Paterson, Walsall surely could not be expected to repeat last seasons excellent form. But three wins out of three in all competitions is a truly brilliant start for Dean Smith. The decision to prioritise Craig Westcarr as their main striker as well as re-signing Adam Butler and Adam Chambers seems to paying dividends. Their latest result, a 1-0 victory away at Oldham means the Saddlers move to joint first in the league along with Peterborough and Leyton Orient.
