Gills striker Williamson set for Priestfield chance

Gillingham striker Ben Williamson will not be returning to Cambridge United on-loan, according to Cambridge News.

The 27 year old joined The U’s on a six week loan deal in mid November and scored 3 goals in 8 matches during a successful spell at The Abbey Stadium.

Williamson’s form for the League 2 club impressed Manager Shaun Derry who wanted to keep the striker at Cambridge United beyond the New Year but Williamson could now be set for a chance to compete for a starting birth at parent club Gillingham.

Gills Manager Justin Edinburgh has hinted that the striker could play a part in Thursday’s League 1 fixture at Wigan Athletic.

The fixture promises to be a mouth watering clash at The DW Stadium with both clubs looking to gain promotion to the Championship.

Williamson has proved to be a success at League 1 level before having played in the division during his time at Port Vale. The Lambeth born striker played as a lone striker at Vale Park before rejecting a contract extension and deciding to move on to Gillingham in June 2015.

The striker started his senior career at non league Worthing then moved to Spain where he played at The Glenn Hoddle Academy to work on improving his technique before moving to play professional football back in England.
