Northampton sign proven League 2 goalscorer on loan

Northampton Town have completed the loan signing of Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins. The former Hibernian and Swindon Town striker has joined on a deal until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old certainly brings a wealth of experience with him, plus he is more than used to finding the back of the net throughout his playing career. He has already scored seven times in League One for the Shrews and also helped himself to 17 goals last season as he helped the club achieve promotion out of League Two. The video below shows some of Collins’ goals with Shrewsbury last season, including one goal against his new team, Northampton Town.

His proven goalscoring ability at this level was understandable one of the key reasons why Cobblers boss Chris Wilder wanted to bring him to the football club. He expects the striker to prove to be a major asset for the remainder of the campaign,

“We are delighted to bring in a player of this quality and it is important that we strengthen the squad when we are doing well.

We are not looking to take anything away from the squad, we only want to add and James adds quality and depth to the existing squad.

He has scored goals at this level and played a key part in a promotion winning team in League Two last season.

He fits into our system and the way we want to play, we have known about him and followed his career for a long time and it is pleasing we have been able to add a player of this quality so early in the January transfer window.”

Collins will be hoping to add to the 79 career goals that he already has to his name during his time at Sixfields. He joins a club sitting in second spot in League One, three points behind leaders Plymouth Argyle but with a game in-hand.
