Barnsley loanee Toney returns to Premier League club

Barnsley’s loanee striker Ivan Toney has been recalled by parent club Newcastle United, despite the 19-year-old’s loan expiry date having been initially set for January 9th.

Toney signed on with The Tykes on November 9th, and the youngster has had a crucial positive impact in the club’s desperate attempt to avoid relegation to League Two.

Making eight appearances, Toney most notably scored a vital winner in Barnsley’s clash with fellow strugglers Colchester United.

Additionally, Toney played an important role in Barnsley’s shock Football League Trophy victory over Wigan, scoring the club’s second goal as well as the penalty which sent The Tykes through to the Northern Area semi-final in the competition.

However, due to Newcastle’s worsening striker situation, Toney has been called back to the club by Steve McClaren. Toney has previously made three substitute appearances for the Magpies since signing for the club in the summer from Northampton Town.

Speaking to Barnsley’s club website, manager Lee Johnson addressed Toney’s departure.

“It’s unfortunate with the situation that’s developed but Newcastle have to protect themselves over the Christmas period” Johnson said.

“He’s done really well and helped himself to a couple of goals. I’d like to place on record our thanks to both Newcastle United and Ivan.”

Following Toney’s departure, Barnsley will need to rely on the likes of Conor Hourihane and Sam Winnall remaining fit and in-form to fire The Tykes to League One safety.
