Hockaday happy with Harriers despite Leeds love

Former Leeds United manager Dave Hockaday insists he is happy in his current job with Kidderminster Harrier, despite a recent newspaper article suggested he is desperate to return to Elland Road in some capacity.

Hockaday was the shock managerial appointment by Massimo Cellino to the Leeds United hot-seat in June 2014 but was eventually dismissed in August, a full 70 days after being appointed. However in October he made a return to football management with the National League strugglers.

An article in The Sun from a few weeks ago suggested that Hockaday would be more than open to returning to the Yorkshire club,

“I would crawl over broken glass to go back there (Leeds).

I don’t have the ego to be a head coach so if the president called and said ‘coach the Under-21s or be an assistant,’ I’d love it.

I love the area and love the people. Leeds is my favourite city in the world to eat and shop.

Everyone said ‘David who?’ But I won over the dressing room within a week despite it being the most dysfunctional dressing room ever.”

However the ex-Forest Green manager today told Stroud News & Journal not to read too much into those comments and insists he is fully focused on the job he currently has,

“I know a lot has been said but I want to assure the fans I am 100 per cent committed to the club.

I am the first person into the ground at 7.30am and am desperate to see Harriers do well.

I love the club and I am working very hard to get things right.”

Hockaday was one of the many managers to be hired and fired under the leadership of Cellini at Elland Road, however it clearly hasn’t damaged his admiration for the football club. It was perhaps naïve of him to even entertain an interview of that nature and to allow the conversation to go down that route. Especially considering that he is managing a club ten points from safety and at the bottom of the National League table with only two wins all season.
