Wigan loanee returns to Premier League club for treatment

On-loan midfielder Francisco Junior has returned to parent club Everton to receive treatment on a groin injury, with uncertainty surrounding whether the 23-year-old will return to Wigan.

Junior signed with the Latics as part of a double loan swoop which also saw Everton youngster Jonjoe Kenny make the switch to the DW Stadium in July. Kenny returned to former Wigan boss Roberto Martinez’s side after his one month loan deal had expired.

Having been unable to remain a permanent fixture in Gary Caldwell’s side due to having to deal with injury throughout his loan deal, Junior has now officially returned to Everton in order to receive treatment on a groin injury. Despite Junior now being back at Everton, the Portuguese player has impressed both Wigan fans and Latics manager Gary Caldwell in his 12 appearances, meaning that a return to the club for Junior isn’t out of the question.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Caldwell provided the latest updates on Junior’s situation.

“He has a problem in his groin area, and he’s been sent back to Everton,” Caldwell said. “We don’t know the full extent of it, they’ll be assessing it there.”

“We’ll see how he is this week, and hopefully it’s not too bad and we can get him back soon.”

Caldwell also noted his intent to try and extend Junior’s loan deal provided the 23-year-old’s injury isn’t too serious.

“He’s definitely here until next month, and we’ll be able to assess the loan situation as soon as we get the full diagnosis,”

“He’s certainly someone we’d like to keep at the club if we can.”

Junior is the third Wigan loanee this week to return to their parent club, after Sean Murray returned to Watford on Thursday and Alex Revell moved back to Cardiff City on Monday.
