Terriers stung by Bees at Griffin Park

When you are three down by half-time, you know things aren’t looking too rosy and that a miracle likely of biblical proportions will be needed in the second 45 minutes. That’s the situation that Huddersfield Town faced yesterday as they went in at the break 3-0 down to Brentford at Griffin Park.

The damage to the Terriers, which left them both terrorised and traumatised, was complete by the 31st minute of the game thanks to goals from Brentford’s Sergi Canos (5′), Lasse Vibe (21′) and Alan Judge (31′). Whilst Huddersfield gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a goal straight after the restart from Joe Lolley (46′), Judge drilled home a penalty (55′) to restore the Bees’ three-goal advantage which they carried through to virtually the end of the game with Huddersfield scoring a late second by Kyle Dempsey (90+1).

A dismal first half display was rounded on by fans on Twitter and whilst the scoreline was kept respectable over the second 45 minutes, the loss still leaves the terriers perilously close to the Championship drop-zone with Town only three points and better goal difference above South Yorkshire side Rotherham.

View from the sidelines

Kyle Dempsey (Huddersfield Town website): “It felt brilliant to score my first goal, but that kind of got killed off as the game had already gone at 4-1 down. It’s only worth a bit of personal pride, but I didn’t take it as an achievement in today’s game.”

David Wagner (Huddersfield Town website): “The first half was the worst we have played together. We had no control over the game in the first 45 minutes. We were not able to keep the ball, especially in the centre of the game. We had a first touch and were bad at passing,”

Dean Smith (getwestlondon website): “I said to the players if we’d started the second half well, it could have been the complete performance but we started slowly. We can only get three points and I felt we deserved the win.”
