Defender Dean told he faces fight to win back starting spot

Dean Smith has refused to give Brentford defender Harlee Dean any assurances about returning to the side after his sending off against Nottingham Forest, according to getwestlondon.

Centre back Dean, who saw red in the 2-1 win over the Reds, has missed the last three games, with Smith being in charge of two of them after joining from Walsall.

Dean is now available again for tomorrow’s trip to Cardiff City but Smith says he may have to settle for a place on the bench with replacement Jack O’Connell scoring in the 2-2 draw against Fulham .

“Harlee is available for selection but the two lads have done well. Harlee knows it’ll be a test to get back into the team,” said Smith.

“We’ll be looking at the players on Monday and see how they have recovered. We’ll assess with the sports science and medical team and make the decision accordingly.”

The Bees boss will have a selection headache for the trip to the Welsh capital with Maxime Colin also available again for selection after a knee injury, although Nico Yennaris has impressed in the Frenchman’s absence.

Smith added: “I’m really pleased with the squad I’ve got. I’ve got Harlee Dean coming back. Maxime Colin is ready, while Andy Gogia had to miss out. We’ve got strength in depth.”
