Leeds United: Evans would back himself to score

Leeds United took 18 shots against Charlton, outshooting the Addicks by four shots. However, the Whites only had three shots on target and again failed to score. This profligacy in front of goal has been worrying Leeds United fans for a while, now boss Steve Evans weighed into the debate.

Despite pressing Charlton back at times, and near the end thretening to overwhelm them as the Whites sniffed blood, Leeds left another game with the kudos of having been the best side on the turf but without the important goals, much like some other games from earlier on in this season. This left Evans nonplussed somewhat and even confident that he could have been the difference out on in the middle. Speaking to LUTV, Leeds’ in-house TV channel, Evans admitted the play and finishing was not to his liking saying he was, “frustrated you know, I was wishing I could be on the end of one of them because I’d probably have scored.”

Evans spoke of other options that he had during the game, mentioning that he had Italian striker Mirco Antenucci warming up for “25 minutes” but decided against throwing him into the fray in case it set the attacking dynamic that Leeds were building. Speaking on this matter, Evans said, “We just had that sheer much dominance and we were making good chances. I know there is the argument that you say put the striker on he might get the goal, but we’d have had to have changed shape and that might change the flow of the game and we were just so far in control.” Not wanting to upset the footballing apple cart, Steve Evans chose to leave Antenucci on the bench as he sought a victory via other means.

Evans was also vocally very proud of his players for stepping up to the mark in the second half that he said it even bettered what he saw the week before against Championship high-flyers Hull City. Speaking of the second half at the Valley, Evans said, “I said to the players they should be really, really proud and special of the second half. I thought the second half today was much better than the first half against Hull. I thought it had more.” However, as Evans himself admitted the vital ingredient missing was goals, the closest Leeds came to scoring was late in the second half when the impressive Tom Adeyemi lifted the ball over the Charlton Athletic keeper, only to see his lofted shot hit the outside of the post and bounce away from the goal.
