Arsenal and Holland legend linked to Reading job

Former Arsenal legend and current Ajax assistant manager Dennis Bergkamp is a shock contender to become the next Reading manager according to Daily Star. A flurry of money has led to the 79-cap Netherlands striker drastically shortening in the betting to succeed recently sacked Steve Clarke.

46-year-old Bergkamp has been assistant manager to Frank de Boer with the Dutch giants since 2011, and has been touted as a potential successor at Amsterdam ArenA, which is also the club where he began his career, featuring just less than 200 times and scoring over 100 goals.

He also has coaching experience at international level, when offering coaching duties to the Netherlands B side for a period a few years ago. He has certainly come through the ranks in the coaching world, also playing a part with the Ajax Under-12 side first and then progressing onto the Under-19s.

Whilst it certainly seems like a shock move at this moment in time, Nigel Pearson cannot be appointed to every Championship job going at this moment in time! The former Leicester City manager currently remains the favourite to succeed Clarke, with Brian McDermott, a former Reading manager, another who is said to be high up the pecking order with the Reading hierarchy.

It wasn’t that long ago that Clarence Seedorf was mentioned in conversations and rumours to become the next manager of Queens Park Rangers, before Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was eventually appointed. Whilst you have to take rumours like this with a pinch of salt, it is certainly a fascinating potential combination. Perhaps he could be a future Arsenal manager? Maybe Reading would be a good stepping stone? We shall see.
