No Newcastle bid for in-form Oxford midfielder

Oxford United Chief Executive Mark Ashton has told the BBC that the club hasn’t received any offers or enquiries from Newcastle United for midfielder Kemar Roofe.

The 22-year-old former West Bromwich Albion youngster has impressed for Michael Appleton’s men this season, finding the net on eleven occasions. He scored the winner a few days ago in the away clash versus Dagenham & Redbridge. Ashton did admit that a number of scouts are beginning to watch the team following their fine start to the season, but says they’ve had no offers from any club, for any player so far,

“Nobody has called directly on Kemar Roofe or about any of our players.

There’s lots of chatter in the background from agents, but that’s what the industry is like.

Over the last six-to-nine months, the type of clubs attending (sending scouts) has changed dramatically.”

Ashton insists that the club are under no serious pressure to sell any players, considering their finances are more than stable at this present moment. It is clear that the sole aim for this season is to get into League One and he believes keeping their best players gives them a great opportunity to achieve that,

“Myself, chairman Darryl Eales and Michael Appleton are under no pressure to sell players.

We want to keep this squad together and our key focus is to get us out of this division.”

Roofe experienced several loan spells away from West Brom before joining Oxford in February of this year, initially on loan, before making the deal permanent over the summer for an undisclosed fee. He has made up for lost time in terms of racking up the appearances and clearly knows where the back of the net is as well. It isn’t a shock to see higher league clubs supposedly send scouts to watch him, and Newcastle sure could do with some goals in their team!
