Clarke to remain with ‘mind blowing’ Reading

Steve Clarke today informed GetReading that he declined the chance to become the next Fulham manager because he already has a better job. The still Reading manager also insisted his decision was nothing to do with money and described what he already has in place at Reading as ‘mind blowing’.

Clarke was of the opinion that it he was perfectly within his rights to discuss a managerial role with another club, especially when one was prepared to pay a fee to lure him to Craven Cottage. He believes he has made the right decision in the end, but accepts it has been a testing few days,

“I understand the angst and anger among supporters, but when someone is prepared to pay money to speak to me, it’s something as a professional I have to look at. I went to Fulham and decided what I had here was better for me.

It wasn’t about money – it was about ambition and professionalism. I didn’t want to think what if.

What I have here is more mind blowing. I’m happy with what I have here.”

The former West Brom manager also suggested that he’ll remain in charge at Madejski Stadium ‘for the rest of my contract, I hope’ but clearly the fact he spoke to another club has certainly added plenty of question marks from the Reading fans. Some are of the opinion it doesn’t matter now he is officially staying, whilst a large proportion are unhappy that he even contemplated leaving.

Perhaps three points at home to Reading tomorrow will remove some of that. However it is clear that Clarke needs to win over many fans in the near future. He does believe the players are all firmly behind him however, and that the past few days shouldn’t have caused a distraction on the playing front.
