Goalkeeper Marton Fulop dies after battle with cancer

Former goalkeeper Marton Fulop has died at the age of 32 after a battle with cancer. He played for a number of Football League clubs such as Ipswich Town, Coventry City and then Championship sides Leicester City and Sunderland.

The Mirror reports that he had a tumour removed from his arm in 2013 and was given the all-clear to return to competitive football, although he never did. His last action came in Greece with Super League side Asteras Tripoli in the 2012/13 season. The keeper also went on to win 24 caps for the Hungarian national team.

Fulop began his career in Hungary for various teams before moving to these shores with Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. He found it difficult to break into the first-team at White Hart Lane, and as such had loan spells away at Chesterfield, Coventry City and Sunderland, before eventually joining the Black Cats on a permanent basis.

He would spend a large part of his career on the books at the Stadium of Light, although he would soon find himself back out on loan. Leicester City, Stoke City and then a brief stint at Manchester City would follow, before Roy Keane signed him for the second time in his management career, this time with Ipswich. Following a brief stay with West Bromwich Albion, Fulop went to Greece before he encounter some health issues.

Everyone at The72 would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Marton’s family and friends.

RIP Martin Fulop
