Neil Warnock has told TalkSport that he is not in the running to become the permanent Queens Park Rangers manager. He insists that he will remain as interim head coach until a new man is appointed in the near future.
The 62-year-old avoided defeat in his first game of his second spell in charge with a 0-0 home draw to Preston North End over the weekend. He initially was installed at the club as a first-team advisor to Chris Ramsey, however with Ramsey now gone, Warnock says he is very much keeping the seat warm for somebody else,
“I was just glad to be asked to come back to the club for a couple of days to help the club move forward, and I think I can do that.
Just having me here has made it easier for them, they don’t have to rush into anything and they have time to decide who is the best man is for the job.”
The former Sheffield United and Crystal Palace manager, who is part of the elusive ‘1000 Club’, also says he hasn’t handed in his CV to be considered for the role full-time. He believes the job is an attractive proposition for any manager,
“Tony Fernandes comes over here in December for a month, so if it’s not done by then I think they’ll decide during that time while he’s here. They’ll look at all the candidates and I’m sure they’ll find someone who will take the club on.
They’re all gone out to Malaysia this week, Les Ferdinand and chief executive Lee Hughes, and so they’re obviously going to be discussing it there. There are some good applicants, there are some good names around.”
Warnock is well-aware of the type of manager that is being considered for the role and touted around the media, and believes any one of those names would do a good job, with what is a fine squad,
“There are about five or six managers mentioned- Paul Lambert and Nigel Pearson- in the papers, and quite rightly so, they’re all good candidates.
It’s a decent squad at QPR and it only needs a few tweaks to it. For a manager it’s a fantastic place to be – it’s a great club, a lovely club, with good old fashioned fans. It’s a great atmosphere for a manager.”
There has been no set timescale regarding any appointment being made, meaning it is very much business as usual for Warnock at this moment in time. Former Leicester manager Pearson remains the heavy favourite to succeed Ramsey at Loftus Road.
