Ex-Notts County boss closing in on Cambridge job

Shaun Derry is said to be closing in on being appointed as the new manager of League Two side Cambridge United. The Cambridge News reports that he was present at Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Basingstoke and was ‘taking notes’.

The 37-year-old has been out of management since being dismissed from his role with Notts County, who were then struggling against relegation from League One, before eventually going on to be relegated. It is believed that Derry has already met with Chief Executive, Jez George, about the vacant position.

Derry is well-known to Neil Warnock, with the pair working together in the past, and the current interim head coach at QPR is said to have been keen on bringing Derry back as his assistant manager. However the former tough-tackling midfielder is said to be desperate to get back into management as soon as possible. Notts County remains Derry’s only management role to date, helping them avoid relegation on the final day during his first season at Meadow Lane.

Chris Wilder, the current Northampton Town manager, is said to have distanced himself from the role. Peter Taylor, now managing in the Indian Super League, is another name that is being strongly linked with the top guy at Abbey Stadium.

However it now looks as though Derry is the most likely man to be announced as the successor to Richard Money in the coming days. He would take over a club that is sitting in 18th place in League Two, although they are in the second round of the FA Cup.
