Blackburn Rovers: Paul Lambert agrees to become new boss

Former Aston Villa and Norwich City manager Paul Lambert has agreed to take over as boss at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, according to talkSPORT.

Blackburn owners Venky’s sacked Gary Bowyer on Tuesday after two years in charge of the club due to a disappointing start to the season.  The owners felt that a change was needed in order to close an eleven point gap on the play-off places.

Several names were linked to the job including Nigel Pearson and Slavisa Jokanovic.  Former Blackburn favourites Tim Sherwood and Tugay were also names mentioned by fans.  However it is believed that Venky’s want a manager who has won promotion from the Championship in the past.

It seems therefore that this is one of the reasons why they have chosen former Norwich City manager Paul Lambert.  Lambert achieved successive promotions with Norwich, taking them from League One to the Premier League.

Lambert will take over a club in the bottom half of the Championship who are currently under transfer embargo so will definitely have his work cut out.  Despite this, Blackburn fans will no doubt be encouraged by Lambert’s previous record in Championship football.

It is believed that former West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine will come in as Lambert’s assistant to help lead the team to promotion.  Irvine previously worked as a youth coach at Ewood Park.
