Paul Lambert

5 reasons Paul Lambert would be good for Blackburn

It now seems to be fairly inevitable that Paul Lambert will soon be back in management with Championship side Blackburn Rovers. They fired Gary Bowyer yesterday but could soon be set to welcome a top manager to replace him. We look at the five reasons why this would be an excellent appointment.

Style of play

Although some Aston Villa supporters may disagree with this, it is probably best to ask Norwich City fans instead! Lambert is a manager that generally likes his teams to play entertaining and attacking football. Some would say Bowyer fitted into this category as well, although this is obviously a resulted-based industry. The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder guided the Canaries to back-to-back promotions from League One into the Premier League. He achieved this with a high-tempo attacking game. He’d probably need some recruits, but he could get the Blackburn fans back onto the edge of their seats.

Track record

It really is important that Lambert isn’t solely judged on his recent exploits with Villa. It was obviously a very difficult time for the football club, and Tim Sherwood also found that out the hard way. Clearly something is not right at Villa, and they are something of a sinking ship. Nevertheless, Lambert has been a success in management. Norwich were very much a sinking giant when he took over. The very last game before his appointment, they lost 7-1 at home to Colchester United. In that same season, he guided them to promotion. He also led Wycombe Wanderers to the Semi-Final of the League Cup as well, which is no mean feat. He has his methods and way of working, and generally this works. Blackburn could be a perfect match.

Experience

At the age of 46, he is still relatively young in terms of the typical, average football manager, however he has been around the block so to speak. Even taking into account his playing career, there is no doubting that Paul Lambert is very much a ‘football man’. Ask anyone in the game who has worked with him and they’ll provide a glowing reference to him. Since being out of management, he has gone around Europe picking up ideas and training techniques from various clubs. He has been involved in relegation scrapes and promotion races, so there is very little that Lambert hasn’t experienced. Randy Lerner was a tricky owner at Villa, so the Venky’s probably wouldn’t present a major problem.

Respected name

At touched upon above, there won’t be too many bad words said about Paul Lambert from members of the footballing community. Yes, some fans again may disagree with that, but that is part and parcel of the footballing world we are all a part of. However Lambert has picked up many contacts throughout his career as a player and in management. He could bring something a little different to Blackburn Rovers. They have had a ‘certain’ manager in recent times and perhaps nobody of the type Lambert fits into. The last four managers have been unproven types looking to make a name for themselves, however, as mentioned above once again, Lambert has been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

Immediate impact

Lambert generally makes a quick impact upon the clubs that he joins. Once again, some Villa fans may disagree! Nevertheless, it is amazing how often a new manager can quickly transform the mood around a football club. If he gets the Rovers job and walks into that dressing room on a matchday, those players will sit down and listen. He commands respect and doesn’t need to do a great deal to earn it. This man is a Champions League winner. He has a proven track record in the Championship, gaining promotion and winning the Manager of the Year Award with Norwich. He wants to create new memories however and after his tricky spell with Villa, he’ll be ever so desperate to prove himself once again.
