Northampton boss the favourite for Cambridge job

Chris Wilder is the current favourite to become the next Cambridge United manager. The current Northampton Town manager could well be set to join their divisional rivals and take up the vacancy that was left free following the dismissal of Richard Money.

48-year-old Wilder earlier this season suggested that he wasn’t prepared to leave the Cobblers, after he was linked with former club Rotherham United. However given the financial situation surrounding the club at present, he could be tempted to join a club that isn’t suffering from such troubles.

Wilder would also command a fee should Cambridge wish to prize him away, and whilst it wouldn’t be ‘mega-bucks’, that money would be pumped back into the Northampton Town Football Club ‘coffers’. This weekend Wilder and his team, who have still yet to be paid their wages for the past few weeks, did their bit to contribute to club finances by gaining a passageway into the second round of the FA Cup with victory over Coventry City.

Over the weekend, Wilder spoke to Daventry Express in saying that he the next Northampton owner has to ‘look after the football club’ and it is done so in the ‘correct way’. He also gave a subtle hint about his own future, suggesting that he won’t be at the club forever, but that the club has to last forever, regardless of managers and players.

Out-of-work boss Shaun Derry, a former manager at Notts County, is another name being strongly linked with the role at the Abbey Stadium. Experienced manager Peter Taylor, who is currently in charge of Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League, is another who is said to be in the running to succeed Money. Current caretaker Joe Dunne has so far neither denied or confirmed his interest in gaining the top job on a long-term basis.
