Derby County to move for ex-Forest winger

Derby County will resume their interest in former Nottingham Forest winger Michail Antonio in January, reports the Daily Mirror online.

The Rams reportedly bid £5million for Antonio in the summer, a bid which was rejected by local rivals Nottingham Forest, before Antonio eventually signed for West Ham United for around £7m in August.

Antonio, 25-years-old, has hardly featured this season, making a solitary league appearance coming on as a substitute during the victory over Manchester City in September. The winger has had spells at Reading and Sheffield Wednesday with loan spells at Cheltenham, Southampton and Colchester, prior to moving to the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest fans voted Antonio “player of the year” last season and were desperate to keep him at the club, however the bid from West Ham was far too tempting for the club, currently under a transfer embargo.

Derby lost to their local rivals on Friday night, and a disappointing performance highlighted the need for more flair and creativity with many fans suggesting the club needs to recruit a pacey winger as soon as possible.

What remains to be seen is if the clubs will agree a loan deal prior to any potential transfer, a philosophy which has worked well for the Rams in recent seasons.
