Russell Slade has been given funds by owner Vincent Tan to improve his Cardiff City squad in January. He told this to WalesOnline at his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Ipswich Town in the Championship.
Tan has been something of a cut-figure around the Welsh club in recent times. He has only attended one Bluebirds game this season, that being the away game to Queens Park Rangers. Plus he has only been present at one additional game in this calendar year alone, the January clash with Derby County being the other.
The previously outspoken Malaysian has further expanded his business interests in football by committing to three more clubs. Those being Belgian side KV Kortrijk, FK Sarajevo and Los Angeles Football Club. However Slade, who spoke with Tan earlier this week, revealed that he has been given permission to strengthen the squad in the next transfer window should he wish,
“The owner is still dedicated to the club and what we are trying to do. Absolutely. That’s definite.
I had a good conversation two days ago. We had a chit-chat. He’s watching every game.
The owner is very keen for us to be successful and to strengthen if we need to in January. He’s aware of the injuries and aware we are working hard and trying to stay in there. We’ll look at it in the January window.”
It is believed that Cardiff are particularly looking to strengthen the team in the forward areas. Goals have become a big concern throughout the season, and an injury to Kenwyne Jones certainly isn’t helped their cause. Although they sit in 8th spot, if the league table was based on goals scored alone, then they’d be sitting in 14th. Defensively they have the fifth best record, but Slade is keen to ease the pressure on his backline but improving the forward line.
