Casper the friendly Sloth for Leeds United

Ex-Leeds boss Uwe Rosler praised the professionalism of Danish midfielder Casper Sloth, however he said his chances may be best sought elsewhere. Could the change of regime be a change of fortune for the young Dane?

They say that a new broom sweeps clean and it is often then that old rubbish, or leftover detritus is dispensed with and new things are brought in. However, a cursory sweep with a new broom can also uncover old, forgotten items that once held value, things left to gather dust that can be dusted off and that gleam like new. With a first choice midfield consisting of the likes of Lewis Cook, Stuart Dallas, Alex Mowatt and, at the time Sam Byram, Uwe Rosler was dull of praise for the way that the popular Dane comported himself around the club and the professionalism that he showed in the application of his duties at Elland Road. Rosler said of Sloth,

“I have the ultimate respect for Casper. He will get his reward. Will he get his reward with us or another club? I don’t know. But the way he behaves and works is exceptional. He’s a role model.” Uwe Rosler – Yorkshire Evening Post: September 22, 2015

However, Steve Evans has swept into the seat of power at Elland Road and this might possibly mean that players such as Casper Sloth, previously cast to one side by the former regime, will be given another chance to shine at the club. The 23-year old Danish midfielder, who made the last of his appearances in the Leeds United first team in the February 24 game against Brighton, has so far had his Leeds United action this season in games for the Under-21 Development side under the stewardship of Paul Hart. His chances of appearing in the first team squad have been negligible, well actually non-existent since the ‘glowing’ remarks about his professionalism and demeanour from Uwe Rosler almost set his seal on things.

Sloth is the archetypal ‘forgotten man’ at Leeds United and really needed something of an eye-opener to make the current regime sit up and take notice. That moment could very well have been his performance in the Under-21’s 3-3 draw against their Bolton Wanderers opponents yesterday, a game in which Sloth scored two goals (including the one below.) The goals certainly caught the eye of Under-21 manager Paul Hart who was effusive in his praise of the once-Denmark international and his performance as a whole. Speaking to Leeds’ in-house media channel LUTV, Paul Hart said of Sloth’s performance, “Two great goals, two great finishes and great football to get him in to those positions. Casper’s shown a great attitude when he’s come and played for us.”

With his last Denmark appearance being in a November 15, 2013 friendly 2-1 victory against Norway, Sloth’s resurgent form of late for Leeds United’s Under-21 development squad has likely come too late to reignite his international chances. However, the bigger question is whether Casper Sloth’s form for the Development side is eye-catching enough for Steve Evans’ new broom to sweep the young Dane back into first team contention.
