Wilcox sacked by League Two strugglers York

York City have this morning confirmed on their official website that manager Russ Wilcox has been sacked. He departs the League Two strugglers following a run of nine games without a victory. Assistant John Schofield has also left the club.

The 51-year-old took the York job in October 2014, with the club only one place above the relegation zone but he successfully guided them to an 18th place finish last season. A club statement revealed that a change had to be made after collecting only twelve points this season. They announced that ‘they had to make a managerial change in order to give the Club the best chance of necessary progress in the League’.

The club were also quick to reveal that Head of Football Operations and First Team Coach Richard Cresswell will take over as caretaker manager. He will be assisted by Youth Team Manager Jonathan Greening and Goalkeeper Coach Andy Leaning. Cresswell began and finished his playing career on the playing staff at Bootham Crescent and will be hoping to have an immediate impact, starting this weekend when they travel to Crawley Town.

Wilcox’s final game in charge was a 3-1 home defeat to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, which led to him describing the performance as ‘shambolic’ and ‘nowhere near good enough’ to the BBC. Interestingly the club also announced on their official website that they are inviting applications for the vacancy of First Team Manager. Once applications are reviewed, then an interview process will begin.
