Against the bottom side in the Championship, and after a better performance against Fulham in midweek, Leeds were expected to turn over Bolton today. However, at half time, things aren’t going to plan.
Much was expected of a supposed Leeds-reborn and reinvigorated with the signing of Steve Evans as head coach and playing a more determined and direct style of football. Amongst Leeds United fans there was much derision when goal-shy Bolton signed Dad’s Army recruit Shola Ameobi, a player who couldn’t convince one of five Championship teams to take him on after having trials with them, including Bolton. However, after allowing veteran striker Bobby Zamora to score against them last Saturday, it seems that the Leeds United defence was up to their usual and generous outreach tricks in allowing Shola Ameobi to score in the 32nd minute at the Macron Stadium on his Bolton debut.
Whilst it was bad defending from the corner that led to Ameobi smashing in the ball from seven yards out, it was one man getting the blame. The finger of blame was firmly and directly pointed at goalkeeper Marco Silvestri who had failed to deal with what commentators were calling a ‘simple ball in’, the result of which led to the corner that Bolton eventually scored from. Whilst it was an isolated incident in the game, it is becoming something of a regularity each week with Silvestri making mistakes that are becoming supposedly more noticeable.
Silvestri howler gifts Bolton corner leading to opening goal – Twitter reacts
Some Leeds fans give a cutting remark to Silvestri’s skills,
theres more chance of stevie wonder catching a cross than silvestri. even if silvestri's ball had a bell in it #lufc

Some Leeds fans think that a ‘dirty protest’ would still guarantee him a game,
Silvestri could have a shit on the pen spot and still play the next game #lufc

Some Leeds fans point to Silvestri’s supposed flaw,

A few Leeds fans are hoping for a repeat of the ‘Sicknote Six’ escapade,
Isn't it time Silvestri went on strike again? Useless. Costing us too many games #LUFC

Whilst some fans are hoping for a ‘unexpected accident’ to befall him,
Hope Evans falls on Silvestri so we have to sub him for Horton #lufc

Sometimes all you can do is rely of hyperbole,

It’s pretty clear that Twitter is of the opinion that Silvestri’s stock is dropping faster than the balls that he fails to catch. The thing is, do Leeds dip into the loan market and bench their starter or bench him anyway and rely on USA Under-23 player Charlie Horton?
