Oldham sign ex-Jamaican international striker

Oldham Athletic have this afternoon confirmed on their official website that they have signed striker Ricardo Fuller on a short-term deal. He has been training with the club for over a month and has done enough to impress new manager David Dunn.

The 35-year-old, who has been without a club since being released by Millwall following relegation from the Championship last season. Subject to Football League and FA clearance, his three-month contract will be sanctioned, allowing him to make his debut for the Latics. It remains to be seen if he will receive clearance in time to be involved in tomorrow’s home game against Sheffield United.

The deal has been partly funded by the Playershare scheme that was first founded by Trust Oldham in 2006. Fans make payments, either on a regular or one-off basis, with all proceedings going directly into the transfer funds made available to Dunn.

Fuller played over 70 times for the Jamaican national team, scoring nine goals in the process. This will be the first time Fuller has featured in League One, after spending the majority of his career within the second tier. In 2008 he was part of the PFA Championship Team of the Year in the season Stoke City won promotion to the Premier League.

It would be his time at the Britannia Stadium where he had the most joy in this lengthy career. A loan spell with Hearts in Scotland led to a permanent contract with Preston North End. He handed in a transfer request in the hope of securing a Premier League deal and he got his wish when moving to Portsmouth. He lately moved across to arch-rivals Southampton, being joining up with Tony Pulis at Stoke. In the past seasons he has had three clubs; those being Charlton Athletic, Blackpool and most recently Millwall. Throughout his career he has scored 120 goals in just under 500 appearances.
