The72 League Two weekend betting preview

In 143 League Two games so far this season, there have been 52 home wins and 52 away wins. That fact alone highlights how difficult it is to predict the outcome of matches in this division this season. There has been at least two or three goals in just over half of those matches. We focus on three key League Two matches. All odds are best priced from a variety of betting outlets.

Cambridge United v Northampton Town (Saturday 3pm)

Just over 50 miles separates these two clubs and the pair meet up at the Abbey Stadium this weekend. On paper and purely looking at the recent form alone, Northampton should win this. However it is very rarely as simple as that. The Cobblers are now on the edge of the play-off places following a run of six games unbeaten. In that time they have won at Wycombe and scored four at Morecambe. They have the third best away goalscoring record, whilst Cambridge have lost half of their home matches. Cambridge are a side that don’t score many and considering the quality they have in attack, they should be doing much better. However, that makes it slightly easier to nominate Northampton scoring the first goal at 19/20 with Bwin. This should be a tight game. Five of Cambridge’s last six games have either been drawn or settled by the odd goal. The same stat applies to Northampton. Therefore, backing either team to win by one goal is generously priced at 5/4 with Betway. No other bookmaker is offering this market so it should be taken advantage of!

Plymouth Argyle v Accrington Stanley (Saturday 3pm)

The Green Army were given a televised slot last Sunday when they travelled to Notts County and came away with a 2-0 victory. However anyone who watched that game will have known that the Magpies had plenty of chances in that game and were dominant for long spells. Nevertheless, Reuben Reid helped himself to two goals and sealed a more than solid away victory. They now top the table, but they have interestingly only kept one clean sheet at home. They welcome Accrington who sit in fifth place, making this a big top of the table contest at this early stage of the season. They are the definition of solid and consistent. They have the fifth and sixth best home and away record respectively in the division. They have conceded only three and earned three clean sheets on their travels, but have only scored seven away from home. They have however won their last three away games and Plymouth are also strong, therefore the both teams to score at 10/11 with William Hill is a good selection. This game could go either way, but it will certainly be tight. We’ll put our faith in a 2-1 Plymouth victory at 9/1 with 888Sport.

Leyton Orient v Oxford United (Saturday 3pm)

Oxford seem to be involved in most of the eye-catching League Two matches in recent weeks. They have now crept into the automatic promotion places and have now won three in a row. It is exciting times for everyone at the Kassam Stadium but a trip to Leyton Orient poses one of their toughest assignments of the season so far. The U’s have only lost one game all season, whilst Orient simply have the best home record in League Two so far. They have scored in every home match and scored 12 in total. However they won’t have faced a side like Oxford, one which is so well-organised. As it is a big clash, both teams could cancel each other out in the early stages. Therefore backing the half time draw ay 6/5 with Bwin looks a solid selection. Finally, although Leyton Orient are strong at home, all good runs have to come to an end. Oxford are doing things this season which they simply weren’t doing last season. This campaign could be very special for them and avoiding defeat at Brisbane Road seems like something well within their range now. Therefore, 7/10 for the Oxford double chance (win or draw) with Bet365 is another strong pick which has some substance.
