Ex-Leeds and Preston star set for management job

Former Leeds United and Preston North End striker David Healy is set to be appointed as manager of Danske Bank Premiership side Linfield according to the Belfast Newsletter. He still holds the record as the highest scorer for the Northern Ireland national team.

Warren Feeney resigned as manager of Linfield last week to take up the position of assistant manager to newly appointed Newport County boss John Sheridan, which was a story we covered.

Healy retired from playing in 2013 after a spell with Bury and the failure to win another contract with another club, despite several trial attempts in pre-season. This would represent his first role as a manager, however it would see him take charge of the team he has supported throughout his life.

Linfield play against Ballinamallard United tonight, and Healy is expected to be confirmed as their new manager before kick-off, although he won’t officially take charge of the team until their next game.

Healy played over 100 times for Leeds, playing a big role in the team which reached the Championship Play-Off final in 2006, only to suffer defeat to Watford at the Millennium Stadium. The striker had made a name for himself with Preston North End prior to that, scoring over 40 goals over five seasons.

Since leaving Fulham in 2008, the Killyleagh-born man struggled to regain his earlier career form and went on to switch from club to club, struggling for regular game-time in the process. He had a brief spell in Scotland in the SPL, winning three trophies during his spell with the Glasgow giants. The man who began his career at Manchester United will know be hoping to pass on his playing exploits to his new Linfield team.
