Sheringham slams Stevenage mentality

Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham questioned the hunger and desire of some of his players when speaking to the BBC. He was speaking after his side suffered another defeat, this time against Dagenham & Redbridge in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last night.

49-year-old Sheringham was appointed as the replacement for Graham Westley over the summer, leaving his role as the West Ham United attacking coach. However after 11 league games they sit in 20th place, losing four in a row and only achieving one clean sheet so far this season. Speaking after the defeat at Broadhall Way, the former England striker says some players aren’t hurting enough,

“I’m downbeat but you can expect me to be laughing and joking, it hurts. I don’t like losing.

I’m not sure it’s the same with everybody in that dressing room. I need to work that out.”

Sheringham acknowledges that something isn’t right within his squad at this moment in time. One particular issue is their lack of consistency to perform across 90 minutes. He highlighted the fact that they concede the majority of their goals in the second half,

“It’s getting a bit of a habit coming out and saying that we’re not quite good enough.

We are struggling as a team – we played some nice stuff but we need to play better all over the pitch. It’s tough going at the moment.

We said at half-time ‘Do you know how many goals you’d let in during the second half?’ And there was a deathly silence – at that point it was 16 or 17. That’s a couple more for us to add up to the tally.”

Stevenage will hoping to end their alarming run of defeats this weekend when they travel to Paul Tisdale’s Exeter City.
