Sheffield Wednesday: Why the Gunners game could come too quick

After a memorable away victory against Newcastle in the third round of the Capital One Cup, Owls fans have been treated to a home fourth round tie against giants Arsenal. But the tie could change the tide again.

Sheffield Wednesday go into the international break on a four-game winning streak which was kicked off against Fulham, then saw them beat Newcastle, Brentford and Preston. A turn in form that has put the Owls in tenth place, three points away from the play-offs.

Arsenal blew away an in-form Manchester United at the Emirates yesterday, taking a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes – a great afternoon of attacking play. Alexis Sanchez was the pick of the players, and will certainly worry Owls fans. The supporters at Hillsborough don’t want a repeat of last season when they suffered a 7-0 defeat away at Manchester City.

Before facing Arsenal, Wednesday have to face difficult games against Hull and QPR before a South-Yorkshire derby with Rotherham United – so their form could look a lot different heading into the Capital One Cup fixture. But say if, Carlos Carvalhal’s men do maintain their hot streak – will a potential crushing at the hands of Arsenal change their season back around?

Before the crushing defeat against Manchester City last season, the Owls (then under Stuart Gray) had picked up 15 points from 8 league games. After the loss, Wednesday did not win in the league for 10 fixtures, only picking up 7 points in the period between 23 September and 29 November.

So although the thought of meeting a Premier League big boy like Arsenal is exciting – it could have a damaging effect on the season. Alternatively, The Owls could provide another shock, and it could kick-start another great run of form.

Arsenal head into the game massive favourites with players like Sanchez, Ozil, Cazorla, Walcott, Ramsey – but they can be exposed, and that’s exactly what Sheffield Wednesday will try to do. A narrow defeat wouldn’t be catastrophic for Wednesday but the fans will expect to see a good performance, and to not fold like they did at the Etihad just over a year ago.
