Bolton Wanderers are the latest Championship club to hand a trial to free agent striker Shola Ameobi. Manager Neil Lennon confirmed this to The Bolton News this morning in his weekly press conference.
The former Newcastle United striker has been searching for a club all summer ever since being released by Premier League side Crystal Palace at the end of last season. He has conducted trials and took part in training with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town in the hope of earning a contract. Whilst he has been unsuccessful in that quest so far, Lennon believes he could add another dimension to his squad,
“Shola (Ameobi) has got a good pedigree and might offer us something a little bit different.
We’ll take a good look at him and make a decision from there.”
At the beginning of last season, following his release from the St James Park clubs after 14 years of service, he made the unexpected move to Turkish football when signing for Gaziantep BB. He scored four goals but shortly after Christmas he departed the club, citing family reasons as his reasoning. He then made the move to Selhurst Park but only featured four times.
The Nigerian international certainly brings a wealth of experience and assuming his injury problems are now behind him then Lennon could finally have the striker that he desires. Ameobi has played one full season in his career in the Championship and earned promotion with Newcastle United, scoring ten goals in the process. Perhaps that could be a good omen for everyone at the Macron Stadium.
