Newcastle defender wanted by Preston

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson is wanted by Championship side Preston North End, according to a report by The Sun.

Williamson is not in the plans of new boss Steve McClaren and although his contract runs out this summer anyway, the defender has been told he can leave before then.

Newcastle signed Williamson in January 2010 as part of their push to get back into the Premier League.  Since then, the defender has made 169 Newcastle United appearances, scoring one goal.

However the club appointed Steve McClaren manager over the summer and despite making 31 Premier League appearances last season, Williamson has been told he is free to leave.

Preston boss Simon Grayson is interested in taking the defender, 31, on loan for the rest of the season.  This would be a move to improve Preston’s defence as they look to avoid relegation this season.

A problem with the move could be Williamson’s demands.  The centre back would like a long-term move but Preston may not be able to offer this.  Wages may also prove a stumbling block for last season’s League 1 play-off winners.
