Extent of Gray’s Burnley injury revealed

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has told the Lancashire Telegraph that striker Andre Gray still has a chance of featuring against Reading tomorrow. Their record signing suffered a hamstring injury in Monday’s draw with Derby County.

Although a scan has since revealed very minimal damage to the affected area, former Watford manager Dyche rates Gray’s chances of featuring this weekend as ‘touch and go’. He has been keen not to completely rule him out of contention but does insist that no chances will be taken should he not be 100%,

“We’ll see, he’s touch and go I think. He’s got a bit of a hamstring and it’s a little bit sore. We thought it was nothing too major and doesn’t seem like it is.

The physios are happy that it’s nothing too major. It’s just whether we decide if he’s ready for Saturday or not. He had a scan but only as a precaution and it was minimal. He’s had a few days’ rest and he’s already feeling a lot better.”

Therefore it remains to be seen if the 24-year-old is selected up front alongside Wales international Sam Vokes. Should the ex-Brentford man miss out, then it looks set to be a straight fight between summer signing Rouwen Hennings and Everton academy graduate Chris Long to partner Vokes. However Dyche wouldn’t have any hesitation in selecting either forward,

“I think Rouwen and Longy have done well. They’ve been sitting behind the scenes. They’ve got much fitter than they were when they first came in.

Longy had a strange pre-season, we knew that. Rouwen had come from a different culture and different pace of the game and I think they’ve adapted well.”
