Liverpool could grant Gray big payday

Liverpool are considering making a move for in-demand Birmingham City youngster Demarai Gray according to The Express. The 19-year-old has a release clause in his deal and the Anfield club are prepared to meet it.

Manager Gary Rowett always maintained that the England Under-20 international was never set to leave the club at any point during the summer transfer window, although he did concede that there was interest in the talented attacker. Gray signed a new three-year deal at St Andrews as recently as July but a £3.5million buy-out clause has attracted the attention of several clubs. That fee will drop to £3million next summer should he remain at Birmingham for the remainder of the season.

Ex-Burton Albion manager Rowett identified Gray as soon as he walked into the club as their new manager, indicating that he is destined for the Premier League in the future,

“From the minute I walked into the Club again, you could tell he was a special talent. He knows what he wants to do.

He knows that one day he wants to play in the Premier League and I think he knows that if he keeps working hard on his game and keeps improving, keep listening to people, then he can do that.”

Nevertheless, Gray has spoken to the Birmingham Mail today and is keen to stress that he is happy to remain with the club. Refreshingly he has elected to focus on his football and not immediately hand in a transfer request at the first sign of Premier League interest. Gray has never looked to leave the club in the past and is keeping his feet firmly on the ground,

“My mind was always focused on wanting to stay at Birmingham (this summer). I will know when it’s my time, when the time comes we will see what happens.

But right now I have just signed a three-year contract, I am happy. Obviously I am going to get the speculation but I have always said I have got good people around me.

The gaffer (Rowett) is always speaking to me, as is my family. I am in a good place right now, I am happy and just want to keep playing my football.”

Gray will be hoping to get over the disappointment of their midweek Capital One Cup defeat to city rivals Aston Villa this weekend, as they entertain bottom of the table Rotherham United in the Championship.
