Portsmouth sign Championship keeper to ease crisis

Portsmouth have today announced on their official website the loan signing of goalkeeper Aaron McCarey from Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers. He will start Saturday’s away game at Bristol Rovers and has signed for a month.

With Paul Jones and Brian Murphy suffering from knee and groin injuries respectively, manager Paul Cook found himself without a senior goalkeeper available for this weekend’s match. Michael Poke was out on loan at Eastleigh, but he too sustained an injury meaning that he couldn’t be called upon. Earlier today we revealed how Darryl Flahavan was open to the idea of joining up. He has been training with the club over the summer.

Irishman McCarey has had a string of similar loan spells away from Molineux throughout his career. In the past few seasons he has made moves to the likes of Walsall, York City and AFC Telford United. The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international took to social media to express how pleased he was at moving to Fratton Park.

The 23-year-old is expected to be deputised by Academy goalkeeper Alex Bass on the bench at the Memorial Ground on Saturday. Although McCarey has been short of first team minutes, the video below highlights that he should Bristol Rovers win a penalty, he will be incredibly difficult to pass. The video shows McCarey helping Wolves beat Walsall in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy cup tie back in 2013.
