Sheffield Wednesday boss says Brentford more important

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has said that the club’s game against Brentford on Saturday is more important than tonight’s game with Newcastle, according to The Sun.

Carvalhal has hinted that he will rotate the team tonight from the side that won at home on Saturday, as there could be extra-time and penalties.

New signing Fernando Forestieri is cup-tied so can’t play and it has also been suggested that Carvalhal could rest Barry Bannan, Jack Hunt and Kieran Lee.  However Sam Hutchinson could return to the starting line-up.

Carvalhal said of the match: “We need players who can play 120 minutes. The match will finish late, we might not get home until 3 o’clock in the morning. We then have to travel to Brentford so we have a short time.

“We have to care about these players. It is not a question of rotation. It is a question of managing the health of the players.”

The Wednesday boss is not the first manager of a Championship side to suggest the league is more important than the cup, after MK Dons boss Karl Robinson’s comments earlier today.
