Sheff Utd striker signs for Oldham on loan

Oldham Athletic have this afternoon confirmed on their official website the signing of Sheffield United striker Michael Higdon on a three month emergency loan. He has been allocated the number 34 shirt for his time at Boundary Park.

The 32-year-old’s time at Bramall Lane has been blighted by injury problems, restricting him to only nine starts in League One last season under Nigel Clough. Blades boss Nigel Adkins is keen for the Liverpool born forward to go out and get some minutes under his belt. He began his career at Crewe Alexandra like a number of talented individuals but it was during his time in Scotland where he became noticed on a wider scale.

He found the net on 40 occasions with Motherwell over the course of two seasons, earning him the PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year Award and also the Golden Boot in 2013. That record attracted attention from overseas and made the move to Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen. In August last year, Clough signed Higdon on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

With his current deal expiring at the end of the season, Higdon is now playing for his future, either to impress new Oldham boss Davin Dunn or even his parent club manager Adkins to try and force his way back into the fold. He is expected to make his Latics debut this Saturday when they entertain local rivals Wigan Athletic.
