Former League One boss joins Southend U21s

Southend United manager Phil Brown has today confirmed to Echo News that former Peterborough United boss Dave Robertson will take over the Under-21 side. He took charge of his first match yesterday.

Robertson was dismissed as first team manager of Posh earlier this month, ironically following a 2-1 away defeat to his new employers Southend. Following a series of interviews with different candidates, ex-Hull boss Brown insists that Robertson was the ‘outstanding candidate’,

“We carried out the interviewing process and Dave was the outstanding candidate.

He worked with the youth team at Peterborough for quite some time and said he had the experience of doing what Ricky Duncan does here for 10 or 11 years.

He’s also had six months doing my job so he brings us a lot and he seems to have got the group motivated too.”

Robertson replaces Dale Brooks, who departed his role at Roots Hall after just two months for family reasons. Prior to his time with Peterborough, Robertson was in the Royal Marines and has certainly looked to carry some of the vital experiences and skills learnt from that time into his managerial career. Yesterday he oversaw a behind-closed-doors friendly, as his new team drew 1-1 with their counterparts from Dagenham & Redbridge.

Former Southend captain Kevin Maher was someone who was heavily touted to take charge of the Under-21 side. He briefly took over training while a new coach was identified, but Brown believes he could still have a role to play,

“It’s just a shame at this moment that we only have the one vacancy but we’re looking to make the step up to category two in the EPPP set up and for that to happen we will need to appoint more staff.”

Robertson starts his new role with immediate effect.
