Giles lands first contract at Oxford

Oxford United have signed 21-year-old winger Jonny Giles, the club’s official website has confirmed. Giles has earned his first professional contract after a two week trial at the U’s.

The young midfielder has completed a degree in physics but is now focusing on football.

He said:”I fully appreciate that there is a lot to learn but I am determined to make the most of this chance and do all I can to reward the club for showing such faith in me.”

Having previously played for Maidenhead and for Durham University, the youngster has made the step up to professional football remarkably quickly.

Oxford boss, Michael Appleton, said: “He is quick, he has ability on the ball and he has done really well in training so he deserves his chance.

“He is still very young but the club has a great record of bringing through youngsters like Jonny over the last few years and helping them to develop. We look forward to working with him and he looks to have a very bright future.”
