Influential Russell extends Derby deal

Derby County have this afternoon confirmed on their official website that forward Johnny Russell has signed a new deal. He will remain at the iPro Stadium until the end of the 2017/18 season.

The 25-year-old has started the season in fine form and has quickly established himself as being one of the first names on head coach Paul Clement’s team sheet. The fan favourite joined the club in 2013 from Scottish Premier League side Dundee United, amid interest from several other clubs in England and his native Scotland. Clement believes this is a deserving reward for Russell after a strong start to the campaign,

“Johnny Russell has had a very good start to the season and he has earned his new deal.

He performed well in pre-season and it’s pleasing that he has taken that into the season itself.

Johnny continually shows a willingness to learn and improve, which is always pleasing to see.

Johnny is a popular member of the dressing room and he’s also someone that the fans regard very highly, so it’s pleasing to see him commit his future by signing the contract we put to him.”

The lively winger made his Scotland debut against England in an international friendly back in November 2014 and has been a regular squad member for Gordon Strachan ever since. He scored Derby’s won last season’s Club Goal of the Season when scoring from long range against rivals Nottingham Forest, which can be seen in the video below. He’ll be hoping for more goals like this, starting on Monday when they entertain Burnley.
